THE PLAYER'S NOTEBOOK / 01
Leave a demo with more than a score.
When you close a demo, can you tell someone what interested you? This is a small method for learning your own taste, rather than getting through the largest possible pile of games.
An original FableQuest observation method · 2026.10.09
Start with language, controls and text readability. There is no need to judge a game through a setting that does not suit you. Some introductions take longer than others, so this is not a fixed-minute test. First, reach a moment where you can make a meaningful choice.
01 / OBSERVATION
What did I do?
Replace the genre with a verb.
Instead of ‘it was a roguelite’, try ‘I drew an enemy close, then used one dodge to change position’. Bringing an impression back to an action helps you remember the moment that mattered. This is a fictional example, not a report about a particular game.
02 / OBSERVATION
What changed?
Connect a decision to the game's response.
Try changing one action in a familiar situation. Notice a response, a sound, a piece of screen information, or a change in your own understanding. Naming one difference helps separate liking the artwork from liking what you do.
03 / OBSERVATION
What next?
Leave with a question, not a completion percentage.
Go beyond ‘I want more’. Write one thing you would try next: another tool, another order, another route. A specific unanswered question can be a much more useful wishlist reason than an impressive amount of content.
Keep room for what a demo cannot tell you.
A short sample cannot establish the whole story, late-game difficulty, or the stability of the final release. ‘The controls did not suit me’ and ‘I have not tried the settings’ are different observations. It is fine to write down one reason and stop. Finishing every demo is not a prerequisite for respecting its maker.

If you share something with the maker.
Pair the game's name and official link with one specific moment you noticed. For a bug report, separate your setup from the steps needed to reproduce it and use the official reporting route. Check spoilers and image permissions before posting publicly. A precise observation gives the maker something more useful than an unexplained score.
